The rise of Bill Gates –visionary, businessman and philanthropist
On 28th October 1955, Bill Gates was born in Seattle in an upper middle class American family that had interests in business, politics and community service. It can thus be surmised that this outstanding businessman considered to be one of the richest man in the world had business in his blood. But what he has been able to achieve has more to do with hard work and making use of his own resources like intelligence and initiative rather than inheriting the business from the family. His success should be viewed as the result of hard work and methodical approach in unearthing one’s strengths and building on the positives to achieve goals and targets.
Born William Henry Gates III, he grew up with his two sisters in a competitive environment at home and was taught to strive for excellence from a very early age. Bill had a great appetite for knowledge since childhood and spent long hours in reading books. He fared very well in school and excelled in science and mathematics while also doing well in English and drama. He had developed a liking for computers while in school and had even written a program in BASIC computer language that allowed users to play a game on computer.
Starting a career
The bug of computer business bit Bill at the early age of 15 when he along with school mate Paul Allen had developed a computer program for monitoring traffic patterns in Seattle and earned a hefty sum of $20,000. The two friends came close once again in 1974 when they worked together at Honeywell. Here they discovered the enormous potential of computers and were fascinated by the enormous possibilities that it poised for the future in the area of personal computing. They contacted the company that manufactured minicomputer kit Altair 8800 and with a lot of courage and hard work they could impress the company with their skills in computer programming and was successful in getting attached to the company by writing a program for Altair8800 in BASIC. The seed was sown for the birth of Micro-Soft, a company that Bill Gates and Allen subsequently founded in 1975.
The way forward
Microsoft earned royalties and fee from the owner of Altair 8800 that used the software that was developed by Bill and Allen for them. But the problem of software being copied and distributed worried Bill who had always advocated for software rights believing that copying software amounted to stealing. As a result of strained relationship with Altair, Gates and Allen were compelled to sever their ties with the company and Microsoft started operating on their own since 1978.
Since then, the company has grown and risen to great heights and has made Bill Gates earn a place among the richest people in the world. But riches have not one to his head as he is a benevolent donor for several charitable causes around the world with emphasis on education and computers for which he has set up a foundation, too.
